Omegafriends Background: Before John Day, there was The Pirate King, an almost mythical figure who sailed the seven seas, and even flew above it for several centuries, leading to the idea that The Pirate King was immortal or undead. Truth is, it’s simply a title and a costume, handed down to each successor, each chosen by how motivated they are to continue Piracy. John is the 20th person to use the moniker.
--
John Day was an ordinary man who seemed to have an unusual streak of bad luck following him – his grandpa would joke that it’s because his ancestor swindled a fortune teller and paid the price. He was always somewhat of a tinker, he loved taking apart and building things, and for a curious boy – having a scrap yard within walking distance was a dream, especially when said yard was very poorly secured.
Sadly, during one of his scrap yard trips, he dislodged an object and accidentally caused a junk pile to collapse, trapping his arm under a ton of twisted metal. He was stuck there for several hours before someone heard him cry for help and managed to free the boy, taking him to the hospital. Unfortunately, his arm was so badly mangled that it had to be amputated at the shoulder.
This didn’t seem to have a major effect on him – he stubbornly relearned how to write and manipulate objects with his remaining hand, and went right back to tinkering. John’s school days was uneven – while people avoided him out of discomfort, his interest in science and history allowed him to ace his classes, earning him a full ride scholarship to a prestigious engineering college.
During the latter days of high school and his college career, he has been working on a new kind of prosthetic that in theory should function as good as a healthy limb – and due to his exact desires, he's forced to create unique motors and neurological inputs so that it would respond to thought.
He demonstrated it on graduation day by putting on his prototype and shaking the hand of the Dean, grabbing his diploma and flashing a ‘V’ sign to the audience, showing off its effortless control. John was headhunted by several tech and medical companies in Venture, but he made the naïve error of showing off the details of his designs, believing doing so would make it more likely that they would hire him. He had hoped they use his technological break-through to better humanity, and suggested ways to reduce cost without losing effectiveness.
Instead they stole his work and patented every unique part without giving him an ounce of credit, and they didn’t even hire him. John couldn’t afford a legal fight, and was left feeling enraged by the theft, but tried to pick the pieces back together, working as a longshoreman and drinking in pubs when he saw a news report about a top of the line prosthetic – his work – being released to the public at an outrageous price, and recognizing instantly they were using his cost-cutting suggestions in order to make massive profits off of it. The rage came back, especially when the CEO blithely stated that he’s making the costs “As low as possible for the good of the people”.
It was the last straw. John stormed out and got to work, weaponizing his arm for revenge. And he might’ve gotten himself into serious trouble if he had by chance run into a recruiter for the Pirate King’s crew and signed on as a minion. After several years at work, he impressed the captain with his work ethic and drive. John was pulled aside by the captain and was given the spiel about the nature of the Pirate King’s legacy, then he was handed a pockmarked doubloon – signaling that the former King wanted John to take over as Captain. The pockmarks on the doubloon lines up with a certain island chain in the Gulf of California, revealing the location of a secret treasure hoard four centuries in the making.
Since then, he’s been haunting the skies as The Pirate King for the last several years, committing acts of grand larceny, and particularly targeting those who use their money to take advantage of the poor. And when he's not a pirate, he's an auto mechanic.
Personality: Angry. His entire motivation is based on smothering rage and feelings of being wronged. This is what has driven him into the life of crime. John will never give up the life of piracy while there are still exploitive corporations and governments that protect them. If by some miracle things changed overnight for the better, he would be at a complete loss at what to do with his life as he never had any second thoughts about his career path.
However, his anger only made him subjectively bitter – overall the attitude displayed by the Pirate King could be considered jovial, or even flippant. While anger drove him to the criminal life, he genuinely enjoys playacting the role of the flamboyant “Noble” pirate. Nothing is too embarrassing or ridiculous for him to act out; he’ll even dress like Carmen Miranda if he thinks it’ll get the job done. While it's easy to think he just sees it all as a game, he can turn deadly serious if the situation calls for it - he'd still crack jokes, but they tend to be more grim in nature.
The Pirate King loathes boredom and idleness, and this comes out in his acts. Many of his jail escapes was less due to the fear of prison and more because he got so BORED waiting, and it becomes almost like a game to him to come up with increasingly unorthodox escape routes, or novel ways to make a grand entrance during a robbery. However, once given an objective – such as repairing the engines or planning a heist, John can become completely absorbed in the task, being known to work for almost a full day before he realizes that he should take a break.
While he reserves his rage for his perceived enemies, he is actually a social butterfly when it comes to anyone else he meets. He loves chatting random strangers up, being the center of attention and making sure everyone is having a good time, even if they’re some cape trying to stop him (though their ideas of having a good time is certainly different). John tries to make his crew feel welcome on the ship, often joking around and praising them for hard work. As he experienced having his credit stolen from him, and being denied good work – he’s always careful to give credit when it’s due.
With the targets of his raids, he's outright vicious to them. The Pirate King will taunt and jeer at them, and if they end up as his hostages, he will scare the living daylights out of them - but John hasn't considered crossing the final line, letting them escape alive, though with several more gray hairs then what they start out with.
John has some rules about how he operates, as part of his self-imposed desire to still be better than those corporate raiders:
-Harm no Civilian
-Steal only from the Wealthy and Government Officials
-His crew all get equal share of the loot
-Attack only to stop Capes, never try to seriously harm them (this last one is more out of sheer practicality).
Powers: On his person, John Day has his one of a kind prosthetic arm that can change into several modes by twisting his elbow, wrist, or even finger joints in a specific manner. The modes he has are as follows:
-Cutlass (A twist of the wrist) that pops out of the palm.
-Lockpicks (twisting the finger joints) that can pop out of his pointer finger, pinky, or middle finger depending on what size he needs
-A shot gun (twisting his elbow), causing the hand to pop up revealing the barrel. They’re only good for a single blast.
-A Grappling hook (bend the thumb)
Of course being made out of metal, he could just use his artificial hand as a bludgeon.
As part of the “Immortal Pirate King” sthick, he wears body armor under his costume – painted to match his skin.
The Airship “The Wrath of Fate” looks like someone took an old galleon and added some engines and a large balloon to it (of course painted with his personal jolly roger). It’s loaded with everything expected on a sailing ship: cannons, fire bombs, harpoon guns, nets, and air-powered personal craft for if the crew has to abandon ship. It can be manned with a skeletal crew of five people, but it’s meant to be run with a crew of 15. Not only can it fly, but it also functions as a serviceable sailing ship – for the ship has three collapsible masts to be erected if needed.
In general, John is an engineer and a mechanic, and is very good at repairing various machines if need be.
